We started playing Rocky Road à la Mode recently, and the girls love it!
7 year old B caught on to it easily, so I’d say it’s a fun game for anyone 7 and up. She keeps asking me to join her in a game, and I am happy to oblige because I enjoy it too!
2-4 players can participate in a game, and the set includes:
36 Treat Cards
8 Location Cards
4 Truck Tiles
4 Wooden Trucks
3 Wild Pop Tokens
9 Treat Tokens
1 Road Board
Premise of the game. You are an ice-cream truck driver and seller. First, choose a cute wooden truck to represent yourself on the board (I love how they stack). Then fulfill orders that come in the form of “Treat Cards”, and accumulate “loyalty reward points” after fulfilling a set of orders.
Here’s what it looks like at the start of a game.
What we enjoy. I like how the game is cleverly designed so that stocking up on “Treats” to fulfil orders costs you in terms of time, and movement on the board follows a set of simple rules (mimicking real life trade-offs) instead of the randomness of casting dice.
The girls and I found it quite a refreshing game, as we hadn’t played anything quite like it. I liked the element of half-chance and half-strategy, since we could pick new “Treat Cards” from three open ones and/or the hidden deck.
The first person to accumulate 9 loyalty points is crowned the winner. Look at the truck loads of loyal points when we end a game, whee!
As always, we enjoyed the bright visuals, cheery colours, and good quality materials of such games. It is also compact enough to bring along when we go for meals, or when the girls have to wait for us in church (a great game for them to occupy themselves with when we have meetings or music practices).
There are also two other variations to add on to the games, both by using the included treat tokens – our favourite is to liberally populate the track randomly with them!
