We recently received a set of the first 7 books in the internationally popular Judy Moody series by Megan McDonald. There are 13 main books and another 33 other books as part of this series.
In fact, these books have become so popular with kids aged 6-10 that this is its latest re-print with brand new cover designs. 34 million copies have been sold worldwide!
What I found really cool was that, right from the start, Peter H Reynolds (one of our favourite illustrators and kid lit authors of all time) had illustrated the covers and pictures within. In 2000 when the first book was published, Reynolds himself was but a debut artist.
Author Megan McDonald herself drew material for Judy Moody from her growing up years, as the youngest of 5 girls in the family. She had consistently been left out of family trips because she was ‘too young’ and had ample time to build up significant angst towards life.
Judy Moody is feisty, mercurial (not just moody) and allergic to frills. Traits of an immediately likeable heroine, to the average primary school kid.
The easy to read font and fun illustrations make this book simply perfect as a ‘first chapter book’ for any kid, as the pictures break up the tedium of words and help in the transition from pictures on every page to just words on every page. 7 year old B simply loves it!
It is a breezy read for 9 year old K, but she also enjoys the humour within.
To me, the premise are plots are perfect for my kids, who have Really Really Moody days all too often. I can’t help but wonder why I have to deal with this first world problem, and why they seem to have so many first world problems themselves, so this book probably totally understands them, and helps me to gain a bit of understanding on how this stage of life is also a tough one for them.
