Tangram Tees by Fabricate.Sg

I had one of those ‘now why didn’t I think of that’ moments when I first saw The Tangram Tee on Fabricate.Sg’s website. It’s such a cute idea – a child’s tee with a changeable ‘canvas’.

The girls chose a tee each in their favourite colours, and Fabricate.Sg kindly sent over all these goodies.

I did wonder whether the tangram shapes would stick on well enough, given the fidgety nature (and fiddling fingers) of the average preschooler. Would the shapes and alphabets drop off as they ran and jumped about throughout the day?

These concerns proved unfounded when I opened the packages. The tangrams and alphas adhered really well to the fuzzy ‘grid’ and could only be removed intentionally. There’s some better-than-velcro system going on there…

The glitter pink “Fairy Fuchsia” letters were easier to sort out than the black felt letters, which adhered to each other quite strongly. But the girls managed to choose a few designs to put together.

The tees were super soft, and my girls loved the colours they chose. K said, “Wow, I can change the design when I’m out. So in the morning I can have one design, then change it in the afternoon!” How cool is that, right?

As we tried out the suggested shapes, it turned out to involve some serious brain activity. Trying to figure out how to construct or reverse-engineer the designs was tricky but fun! There are some ‘answers’ on Fabricate.Sg’s website (it’s easier when you can see the ‘break-down lines’), and also a series of cool activity sheets for free download once you sign up and log-in.

Each tee costs $29, and includes the 7 tangram shapes you see, that can apparently be arranged 6,000 ways! It’s amazing how versatile 7 simple shapes can be. I think these tees make for really good gifts, since it’s so much more than a t-shirt. It’s an activity pack all in itself, that could probably keep a kid busy for an entire hazy or lazy afternoon.  It’s easy to get absorbed in creating all sorts of pictures, or placing the shapes such that you have to start interpreting negative space!

There’s an ongoing promotion right now, where every purchase of a tee comes with a free set of alphabets worth $8 (apart from letters it also currently comes with numbers 0-9, and popular letters such as E and A are repeated twice) too! Just enter the code ‘SECRET12’ at checkout.

They only have kid sizes of S, M and L right now, but I’m looking forward to the day they bring in adult-sized tees too.  For now, these fortunate kids have it all.

Apart from making pictures, get a few packs of alphas and you’re on your way to slogan heaven. Sound sassy, sweet, geeky or rude anti-establishment – you’re only limited by the bounds of your own imagination and creativity! Pair the tangram shapes together with the letters, and you could have some seriously cool messages out there.  Here are a few I came up with. 🙂
