A friend of many, many years recently started a home-based bakery and her bakes are simply wonderful!
As she put it so well – these are “rustic cakes filled with fruits or nuts (or both!), light in sugar, and minimally frosted. Each cake is based fresh to order, free from preservatives, artificial colours and flavourings.”
We have had the pleasure of trying so many, and it is no exaggeration to say that we love them all!
A Trail of Crumbs cakes distinguish themselves from the usual sponge-and-cream cakes like how a good novel distinguishes itself from fluff.
Amongst its most popular cakes are the Raspberry Almond Coconut (my dad’s birthday cake pictured below) which is replete with juicy raspberries, topped with a generous layer of sliced almonds and (my favourite part) crunchy almond bits in the moist cake base.
The icing on the cake is how reasonably priced these cakes are – $45 for the cake above and up to $50 for the rest in the main menu. For Mr J’s birthday, we customised a Blueberry Crumble cake without the usual pistachios because our nephew has a nut allergy. It was well-received and the entire extended fam bam are now fans! “So many blueberries inside”, they exclaimed. “I just want more of the top crumble!” said our 9 year old foodie nephew.
This would be $60 as it’s a 1.7kg 9-inch cake – easily feeds 15pax.
My other absolute favourites are the cherry and plum cakes. There’s always a big difference when the baker is generous in her use of really fresh produce. The cherry cake is only available when cherries are in season, and we were spoiled to be able to try it!
The plum cake was a huge hit with me too – because I love plums and these were so sweet and juicy and the entire cake just tasted so healthy and wholesome.
