SuperHero Me 2017 – Plant it Forward: Crafting wheatgrass pots!

Remember I mentioned these super cool inclusive arts workshops recently?

We attended one last weekend!

I was blown away from the moment I stepped into the Objectifs Centre gallery (which is itself a very interesting heritage building that used to be the Middle Road Church, built circa 1870). It has been repainted to a very cheery yellow.

The good folks from SuperHero Me transformed the gallery space into a colourful wonderland – and the decorative objects were actually brought to life off the pages of stories written by children from Kindle Garden, Singapore’s first inclusive kindergarten.

Just look at that!

The children from Kindle Garden drew pictures and shared what they were about, and these were compiled into A3 sized books.

And at the back of each book, was a write-up on each little author!

It was so interesting to see animals and objects from those pages transformed into larger than life decorative pieces, adorning this lively space.

In keeping with the overall theme of “Who is coming to dinner?”, there was this large display of some pre-workshops with children, including those from the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore School.

There were also displays of the unique art work by the kids!

And here are some chairs made at the wood-working workshop too –  how awesome are they?

On weekdays, 2-hour workshops for a variety of kids from all backgrounds are conducted. On weekends, many craft workshops are open to the public, and all may sign up. The workshops are still ongoing, and you can sign up here!

K&B had signed up for “Plant it forward”, where they would decorate recycled containers, pile in some soil and wheatgrass seeds, to grow their own little garden. Don’t they look pleased in the photo?

Beyond loving the intentions behind conducting these workshops, I love the entire set-up – it was like we had entered crafting heaven.

The girls soon got down to work, and busied themselves with filling up their little pots……

Then painting and decorating…… with assistance on the hot-glue with the helpful jie jies who were on duty that day!

After the session, the girls went to explore the treehouse, which also doubles as a soothing place of quiet, as some special needs children may be overwhelmed by the bright lights and colours.

Isn’t this the most wonderful space?

Indeed, inclusion has no fixed recipe. Providing such opportunities for children from all backgrounds to interact, to start to understand one another better, is simply gold.

And what better vehicle than that of art? Our society chases success and ability at breakneck speed, (possibly out of little choice, since there is sometimes a thin line between fighting for survival in this competitive world, versus pursuing ostentatious success) but it is art that unites, art that is a breezy common denominator, and art that is intrinsically inclusive.

And so we support this, in spirit and in action.

  2. This is such a lovely place. The craft area reminds me of Playeum. Gonna check out what activities they have. Hopefully I can bring my boys there to play. 🙂 thanks for sharing

  3. Must be super cool to craft your art pieces in such a “artistic” venue. Love the tree house, should be romantic at night with the dangling bulbs (stars)!
