Izumi Japanese Fish Market (Singapore)

Tucked away at one end of Block 59, New Upper Changi Road (in the Bedok South area opposite the stadium), is Izumi.

I heard about it from my friend’s FB post and simply had to give it a try, cos Bara Chirashi that looks like that, for just $11.80? Sold.

Given that the shop is a japanese fish produce stall of sorts, the fish (raw salmon, tuna and cooked unagi!) and crab in this bowl was predictably fresh. In fact, the crab is the best I’ve had in years, tender and delicately sweet.

Although it is no Teppei Hanare, Sumiya or Tanuki Raw, for this price, it certainly is worth a try. Especially if you live in the vicinity and need a Bara fix, this is a great option!

We ordered some sushi and this Teriyaki chicken skewer plus salmon Don for the kids, and they polished it off! The best part is that all you see below (including egg slices) goes for an astounding $6.80.

There isn’t a lot of seating, and the place seems more like a fresh fish shop that recently decided to sell cooked food, but we managed to procure seats as a nice tucked away corner of the shop.

Definitely a very unexpected find in the heartland, amidst the noisy coffeeshops as well as the large hawker centre and wet market nearby.
