I am becoming a gym rat

I have become somewhat of a gym rat this year.

I have also come to realise that the key determinant to going regularly to the gym is the usual ‘location, location, location’.

I was swayed into signing up for the gym near my office because they offered this really good corporate rate. The last time I went regularly to gym was probably about 10 years ago, due to some free credit card tie-up.

Now, because this gym only  a 3 min walk from the office, I have been able to go 2-3 times a week on average.

Most times, I set aside lunchtime on certain days for gym, either to attend classes or clock about 5km at the treadmill. Then it’s a quick shower, grab a takeaway salad (added points for clean eating, haha!) and then back to work.

Sometimes it’s also possible to visit the gym after work, and there is less inertia and less excuse simply because it’s so convenient. Having colleagues to try out classes together also makes going to the gym more fun.

Together with the Fitbit as a motivator, I must say that I’ve been more regular in exercising this year. There is just something happifying about hitting 15,000 steps a day, or more than 70,000 steps in total for a week.

Ultimately, I guess exercising is not about attaining some ideal weight or shape, but about getting to a level of fitness that leads to better health in the long run. I am mainly hoping to increase my metabolism so that I can indulge in good food once in a while!

As age catches up, I realise that my metabolism is not what it was before, and certainly not what it was in the many years that I was breastfeeding. So to the gym it is!

  1. Well done on getting some regular gym time! You’ve reminded me that I actually have a gym downstairs at my place but I never go! 🙈 Guess it!/ also a matter of making the time for it.

    1. Yup that’s true. I still find outdoor runs more fun than running on a treadmill, but gym classes are the fastest way to pass time during workouts!

  2. It’s always helps to workout together with friends so that you can spur each other on especially on days that you feel sluggish or simply not in the mood to move a muscle. I do agree that our metabolic rate is no longer what it used to be and I’m also putting in effort to get fitter this year so that I can indulge in my happy food.

    1. Yup totally agree friends help! This week I was stumped when I realised I forgot to bring my shorts. *doh* Guess some gyms that provide clothes really remove all excuses!
      And yes, happy food for the win!
