Two new PlayLabs were completed at the Holiday Inn Resort Penang in May and September this year (2017), and they certainly have the ‘wow’ factor.
PlayLab @ Ferringhi Tower
This caters to children aged above 5, and is a very vibrant and colourful space for lots of kinesthetic activity.
Kids can be dropped off there without an adult – so it’s the perfect place to park them whilst you go for a massage.
What really impressed me was their selection of books! I could tell that they were well curated. In fact the TinTin set was like something any adult fan would love to add to their collection. 9 year old K had a good time reading through one of that series.
Junior Playlab @ Beach Wing
The Junior Playlab is suitable for those below 5 years old, and the staff kindly allowed K & B in for this review.
It has these cosy reading nooks, and once again, the curation of books was impressive.
Lots of Usborne books and the like. I wish I had more time to stay there and spend an hour or more reading them myself!
A lovely variety of age-appropriate activities in this space too. Given the age group, children need to be accompanied by a parent. Drop-off services are available, but come with an hourly fee.
The design of the Playlabs were certainly one of the best I’ve ever seen, and I found out that they are specially designed by a Hong Kong based company that has a very intentional philosophy on creating engaging spaces for children to interact and learn through free play, as well as through providing intelligent content.
For instance, this avant garde light wall is actually designed for a life-sized “Connect 4” game. I’m sure other creative games can be concocted for it, the scope is as limitless as your own creativity. Such open-ended play rooms are fun indeed!
The main swimming pool is simple, but serves its purpose. In the late evening, it’s usual to see many families having lots of fun splashing inside to cool off from the tropical heat.
There is also a small sheltered kids’ pool, which provides added protection for children against UV rays.
Another new feature is The Spacation, which provides a suite of services ranging from hot stones massages to manicures and pedicures.
Apart from air-conditioned treatment rooms, there are also three outdoor cabanas where you can have your massages or pedicures, right next to the beach.
Batu Ferringhi Beach
Speaking of the beach, here it is! The kids love sand play, and there was opportunity for oodles of it here.
There is direct access to the beach from the hotel, which makes it super convenient to reach the waves.
As dusk draws near, the beach is usually a hive of activity. Horse or pony rides are available, together with banana boat rides and parasailing (in fact, you can catch a video of Santa parasailing right outside the hotel here, haha!).
If watersports is less of your kind of thing, you could just sit down and relax, as you enjoy the sun setting down the hills of Penang.
So much to do in the hotel – but guess what? Because this is Penang, there is just as much to enjoy outside the hotel!
In fact, just 15 minutes away from the hotel are some of the best attractions for kids – ESCAPE adventure and water park, as well as Entopia Butterfly Park. And posts on those who attractions are coming right up!
Note: Thanks Holiday Inn Resort Penang for the media invite to review your hotel!
