Hatter Street – bakehouse and cafe

Was told that this place served one of the best waffles in town – 外脆内软, I quote. And true enough, the waffles ($8.90) were delicious.

The folks here got the batter just right, and the portion was a good sized one. The only thing is that they have rather limited ice-cream flavours, so it got me wishing that they could team up with my favourite gelato place to serve the perfect combination of waffle with gelato.

Their “whoa-ffles” come in four flavours – the batter is the same, but the ice-cream and sauce varies. We tried the Vanilla ice-cream with salted caramel sauce, which was a nice classic, as well as the Pandan ice-cream with Gula Melaka sauce, which I felt was a good pairing of two local flavours.  Chocolate ice-cream with chocolate sauce sounds a bit too ahberden, but I’d like to try it the next time. If you like coffee (I don’t), the Coffee ice-cream with espresso butterscotch sauce does sound like a winner.

The culinary brains behind the menu belong to Yvette, a teacher turned chef owner, who trained at Bo Innovation, a 3-michelin starred restaurant known for their extreme Chinese cuisine in Hong Kong. Maybe she was a literature teacher, since she calls herself a “Kitchen Alchemist”, no less. In any case, from their Facebook page, one can see that they also produce some pretty rad Macarons.

What I liked was the decor of the place. A bit of literary madness is always good for the soul. Quotes from Dr Seuss, as well as Lewis Carroll, naturally, are scrawled on the walls, lending some food for thought to what would otherwise be, just yet another run of the mill cafe.

So if you’re the mood for some good waffles laced with an irrational thought or two, and are in the Hougang/Kovan vicinity, Hatter Street cafe is your place.

    1. I think you’ll like what they serve! 🙂 Nakorn nearby is crazy popular too, and I’ve heard that Knuckles on the same row has good food too.
