Grassroots book room 草根书室

Tucked along Bukit Pasoh Road is a Chinese bookshop named “草根书室“. It translates to Grassroots Book Room – which somehow just doesn’t give the same feel.

It is a wonderful book room, and there is so much to see. A post card caught my eye, so I bought two, one which I mailed to a friend. It prompted a number of thoughts, so I’ve written a blog post about it in Mandarin, which I’ll publish soon.

The bookshop is mostly stocked with adult books, but there are a number of children’s picture books, like 《寻找》which I wrote about here.  In fact, the author held a presentation of the original art pieces from this book at this very book room last year.

Another fascinating book I saw was this one.

It is totally beautiful but I heard another browser say “Wah! So expensive ah!”. And it was. SGD$74. *gulp*

The book room has a very large collection of Chinese books for adults in many different genres. I found this comic book which seemed really cute and readable.

The book room also has a cafe at the back.

  1. what a lovely nook, and what old world/school charm! i am terribly scared that places like this will not last long in such tough business climate such as what we have in Singapore.

    1. Yes, it takes a lot of guts to swim against the tide in setting up and maintaining a bookshop like that. So let’s help support them in whatever little way we can! So that they won’t be extinct in our children’s time.

  2. Stepping into this bookstore is akin to stepping in a page in history! Till today, I have fond memories of my uncle and aunt bringing me to a Chinese bookshop in People’s Park area to browse for hours….I must pop by 草根書室 one of these days, thanks for sharing!
