Everyone needs a little art

At least once a week, I get bugged with “Can we paint, Mummy? Pleaseeeeeee…”

On good days, they help to clean up. On not-so-good days, they paint till it’s quite late, and we have to shuffle them off to bed, and Mummy dearest has the fantastic task of clearing the beautiful mess.

Still, we have fun. And there is something uniquely therapeutic about playing around with colours, textures, media. Creating.

“It’s raining, Mummy!” explains the cloud (so cute right?!) on the top right. When they insist I join in, I paint Mondrian squares, following replicas of course.

Most of the time, there is no method to the madness. But hey, unstructured play is very much in vogue these days, so perhaps the lazy mummy is the proverbial tortoise who is doing something right after all.

I am always glad to be inspired by crafty friends like ScissorsPaperStoneBlog, whose post here inspired our “suncatcher” bookmarks!

I didn’t have contact paper, so I just recycled some plastic packaging from my scrapbooking stuff (of which I have Simply Too Much), stuck some washi tape around, and sealed it up with yet more washi! Really simple, no glue necessary!

3 year old B stuck on her favourite colours, helter-skelter, 5 year old K stuck her carefully selected colours in too, and I joined in by making my very own mix! Hard to tell whose is whose, right?

I thought it was pretty, and looked in part like a vellum pocket filled with mobile confetti (only this is a static one since the pieces are stuck). Also reminiscent of a kaleidoscope, or the suncatcher it’s meant to be.

Since K has been asking for bookmarks, these are three made within 20 minutes in one evening! Yay.
