Durians for dinner – Sensational Singapore

There has been a make-shift durian stall near the MRT station I alight at for the past few weeks. As soon as I emerge from the train in the evenings, a familiar fragrance wafts through the air.

This week, the supply on sale suddenly swelled. I noticed that prices plunged too (law of economics holding true for once).
The hubs is not fond of the fruit, to say the least, but after 4 days of walking past large durians going for $2 apiece, I finally caved last Friday.

Upon enquiry, the packing service (on the spot de-shelling) was only applicable to the 3 for $10 category. Okay, that lot then! Felt the quality might be higher than the $2 variety, though the size was only marginally larger.
My three large prickly fruit friends at the foreground.
As I queued, I was amused to observe a table of four Japanese men chatting animatedly over beer. I’ve noticed a small Japanese community living in this precinct, but this is the first time I have noticed them at the coffee shop. Interesting sights and sounds (of Japanese!) mingled together with the smell of pungent durians… yes, this is my Singapore, my local neighbourhood.
My haul of durians, nicely and freshly packed. The wait was well worth it. A tad 小姐 I admit, but it was much lighter to carry home this way, and I didn’t have to risk being poked, or have to dispose of the shells thereafter. Granted I wouldn’t have husks to drink salt water out of, but well, in this life one can’t have everything, right?
A huge OOH in every bite

The durians were heavenly. Tiny flat seeds throughout. With durian purchases, I usually expect a 50-60% good-durian hit rate, but in this case it was 100%! There were three distinct flavours, but all were AWESOME. There was one that was slightly sweeter, one that was just a lil bitter, and all were creamy, fresh and OOH LA LA. I ate 15 seeds *burp* for dinner.

The best part? When the hubs came home, he didn’t smell a thing. Even though I still had one pack left in a tied plastic bag, for my parents to share. Score!
