****************** I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though it took me a long time to complete, mainly because my speed of reading Chinese is akin to reading it aloud. Nonetheless, it was worth the effort. It is much like… Read more →

A postcard by Little Notes Jetty

Read more →

Grassroots book room

Tucked along Bukit Pasoh Road is a Chinese bookshop named “草根书室“. It translates to Grassroots Book Room – which somehow just doesn’t give the same feel. It is a wonderful book room, and there is so much to see. A post card caught my eye, so I bought two, one which I mailed to a friend. It prompted a… Read more →

Bilingualism – are we really made for it?

My relatively monolingual close relative has a strong theory about bilingualism – that our system is unfair because most humans are just not wired for it, especially if the two languages are disparate in origin. So when I came across this recently published article in The New Yorker, it set off a few thoughts. This researcher found a “systematic bias in the… Read more →

KidStartNow – Christmas Holiday Camp 2014

We received a review invitation for B to attend KidStartNow’s December holiday camp, and a cute Christmas-themed card was even sent to our postbox, seeking her help as “snatcher wolf” had stolen some presents! What a fun way to pique their interest in the upcoming camp. On the first day of camp, we were wow-ed by how the entire centre had been redecorated… Read more →

Airplane principle

In parenting, I think it’s important to practice what I refer to as the “airplane principle”. You know how in airplanes, the safety video talks about oxygen masks should the pressure drop in the cabin? It always says “adjust your own mask before assisting others”. Whilst it might sound very selfish, and counter-intuitive especially to the parents it addresses (who instinctively feel… Read more →
