Mookata – Tom Yum Kungfu

I heard quite a bit about Mookata taking Singapore by storm, but only got to try it for the first time a few months back. If you’ve not tried it before, basically it combines a frying platform, with a moat of steamboat soup.

What I’ve heard is that it’s not a traditional Thai concept, but more of one that was recently cooked up (pun intended) by Thai businessmen who thought that this married two worlds well. Judging by its popularity, they were right! I think there are at least 5 Mookata outlets in Singapore.

Our family decided to go early and give this outlet a try, because we usually see it totally packed, with a long line of people queueing outside. So it can’t be too bad right? (Typical Singaporean foodie thinking at hawker centres too – just choose the stall with a long queue.)

The decor was quite modern and quirky, not unlike a hip joint in Bangkok.

The ‘steamboat’ is seen as above, and the food was fresh to me, and was of a decent variety. It did get pretty warm even though there were fans. Guess it’s all the extreme heat emanating from those pots! I think the next time, we’ll have mookata only in a wholly air-conditioned area.
