Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh – Huat ah!!

We stumbled upon this bustling eatery during one of our visits to the Kampung@ Simpang Bedok. Bak Kut Teh sounded great for that cool evening!

The large posters at the side caught my eye. Turns out this is a social enterprise restaurant too! I was quite fascinated and went to read the whole story.

I was totally fascinated and very impressed that this business hires mainly former inmates (90% of staff! Many of them were impressively tattooed) – a true Yellow Ribbon project. We ordered with gusto for our little family, and added a tip at the end. Service was excellent and speedy!

Yummeh

The food was fantastic – if you like Malaysia-style Bak Kut Teh with golden mushrooms, pig’s liver and stomach, this is the BKT for you. The soup was so tasty we drank it to its dregs. The trotters we ordered were lean (as far as trotters go!) and very meaty. I heard their dry BKT is to die for too, but we have yet to try it.

Good things must share right? I went promptly onto their FB site and started sharing and liking away… and saw many familiar faces of friends photographed with the owner! It was heart-warming just seeing the staff going about their work, knowing that many must have had difficult pasts.

Within a fortnight we were back again! This time with our church lunch group. They loved the food, and I think you would too! Drop by Simpang Bedok if you’re in the area – their stall is right next to Mad Jack, visible from the carpark. Enjoy.
